Will China’s media giants push Netflix out of Asia-Pacific?
Mainland China is one territory where Netflix have not been able to set foot on. It is ruled by its local media giants Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent, known collectively as ‘BAT’. However recent developments suggest that China is aiming for a bigger picture in the Asia-Pacific region to rule Netflix out. It is reported that Tencent approached Baidu, iQiyi’s majority shareholder, to reduce both service’s costs and competition. In addition, Tencent have admitted its interest in Iflix, a Malaysian streaming platform. Tencent is expected to increase their presence outside of its mainland. India will be one of the major problems since Netflix has already settled in.
